This was a fundamental flaw which was built into the structure of The Simpsons to begin with. Homer, Bart and Lisa are all brilliant, well-developed characters. Maggie is just a baby so she can't do much to begin with. But Marge Marge is just a housewife. This episode didn't even start with the traditional Simpsons-on-the-couch bit; instead, Homer is shown going to the polls, wondering why he has to vote when we have the Supreme Court to do it. He is asked for voter identification, even though he has lived in the town his whole life and everyone knows him; he says he gets most of his info from gas station televisions and is immediately let inside. Homer is going over the two presidential choices in his mind and is clearly uninformed about both candidates; he picks Romney, and is then allowed to see Romney's tax records. Before he can go tell anyone, he gets sucked into a giant tube that takes him to a factory in China where everyone is making little American flags.
